The standard interiors that come with XR2's are not too bad. The front seats although not wonderfully supportive are fairly comfortable and for its age the interior is put together to a reasonable level as well. One problem that I think every owner will agree on is the rattles that develop over time...

There could be several reasons for the rattles which can fairly cheaply and easily be cured, If the door cards are making the noise try popping to a breakers yard and removing as many of the white plastic clips that attatch the inner door card to the frame of the door as you can, they will cost around £1 a handful so it may be well worth it! Remove your door cards if you suspect any are broken and replace them.

The other method is to buy double-sided sticky pads or tape and position them between the inner door card and the chassis of the car, this should stop any annoying vibrations.

If it is not a "surface rattle" then chances are it is due to something stretching or breaking over time and locating and replacing could be quite difficult.

Styling:

One advantagious upgrade is to aquire a set of Escort Turbo seats pre or late '90 spec depending on your interior. The easiest way to fit them is to take the runners off of your xr2 front seats and secure them to your new seats (which is very simple to do...only 2 10mm bolts on either side). As anyone who has sat in a nice pair of ERST Recaro's know they hug you properly and allow you to concentrate on driving rather than holding yourself in your seat!

There are also many after-market items that can be replaced or upgraded, such items include Steering wheels, Alloy mats, Alloy pedal extensions, Gators and Gear Knobs, white dials and so on. All of the aforementioned are easy to swap or upgrade and are fairly cheap to aquire...They can also transform the fairly mundane interior that Ford provided.

NB. A note of advice with regard to fitting the alloy pedal extensions, DON'T! They may look pretty good but you will find due to the spacing on the XR2 that everytime you reach for a foot full of break, your foot hits the accelerator at the same time which is obviously dangerous and could spell the end of your beloved XR...

Finally...If you have got more money than sense are you just want that luxury interior how about a nice leather or alcantara re-trim? The cost well anywhere around the £1000 mark is common place. The results however can be quite breathtaking - in some cases totally transforming a car!

A good re-trimmer to try is Torque Interior Design who are based in Colchester, Essex.
