What can I say...the Weekend of the 22/23 of September (Billed as the Ultimate XR Weekend) was full of action, spills and unfortunately a nasty accident! The weekend was split into 2 "events" the Saturday (22nd) was a Track Day at Binbrook Airfield in Lincoln. The Sunday (23rd) was to be used to make grown men and women whince at the sight of their pride and joy being thrashed on a Rolling Road Shootout. The location for this was Well Lane Turbo Centre. |

FastFord Magazine covered both days and a full feature should be appearing shortly in their monthly publication, so keep your eyes peeled for that!
Right, now the scene has been set lets get onto the action... |

In amongst this article you can see pictures of the various participants' cars...and what a selection there was! XR2's running Turbo's and Twin carbs, Turbo'd Escorts, XR2i's and a 4x4 Saph Sierra to mention a few! An early start (7:30am sign on!!!) ensured a slow start to the day but after people awoke form there sleepy state it was time for some fun to be had. After the neccessary safety brief we were all allowed out onto the circuit for 3 sighting laps. Once this was completed we were pulled in and then we all cued up (oddly quite nervously in my case!) ready to get stuck in! Lap after lap of pure adrenalin ensued with inspirational driving from several off the participants! The smiles said it all on returning to the waiting area, as for the majority, track day driving was a new experience (certainly it was for me) and boy did it open my eyes to "real" driving and really knowing the limits of the car. Corners were taken at 80mph Plus and major understeer on the majority of cars was overly apparent! (listen to the videos later and you'll hear for yourself!) As with all motorsport there are dangers both to person and belongings...in this case luckily an individual escaped serious injury...although his car unfortunately did not ! On the second session we were all red flagged! One of the participants had actually rolled his XR2 onto its roof at one of the fastest corners on the circuit! Obviously concern was the immediate emotion felt by everyone taking part as well as watching, as the ambulance and emergency team headed to the scene. 10 Mins later we were told that although the car had flipped and rolled the driver was okay and had walked away with only a few cuts to his hands! The car can be seen below to give an indication of the damage caused! So its not plain sailing by any means! |
